A VISION OF THE END

PRAYER:  Teach me Lord to rejoice in following Your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. (Psalm 119:14)
SCRIPTURE READING:  Amos 8:1-14

INSIGHT:  This vision, like the third one in the previous chapter, begins by describing what Amos sees; a dialogue between God and Amos follows, then a statement of judgment is issued during the dialogue.

God asks Amos what he sees, and he replies, "A basket of summer fruit (qayits)." In response, the Lord says, "The end (qets) has come!"   The root of these two words “qayits” and “qets” are not related at all, but they sound somewhat similar.  However,  their symbolism goes far beyond their pronunciation:  Just as the fruit marks the end of summer, so the summer for the Israelites is about to pass,  the time has come to harvest the ripened fruit of judgement.

The end that is about to come can be divided into four parts, each of which uses a phenomenon of nature to emphasize this ending:    (1) earthquake (v. 4-8);  (2) solar eclipse (v. 9-10);   (3) famine (v. 11-12);   (4) drought (vs. 13-14).

These judgments were quite clearly linked to the moral failure of the Israelites.   The focal point here is about business practices that violate spiritual principles; something to be wary about regarding the life style of our modern economic society:

(1) Covetousness --The merchants asked when will the New Moon and the Sabbath pass (v. 5),  so that they can sell their grain and resume their business. For them, the Sabbath and the New Moon were not days to worship God, but days wasted and opportunities lost to exploit the poor and accumulate possessions. Their mentality violated two of the Ten Commandments:   The fourth commandment, "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy" and the tenth commandment, "You shall not covet."

(2) Fraud –  Making the ephah small and the shekel large, falsifying the scales by deceit.” (v. 5)  Using deceptive means to make huge profits; thus, they violated the eighth commandment, “You shall not steal.”

(3) Disregard for human life  -- When the poor couldn’t afford to buy food, they would be sold as a thing to make a profit; the merchants would sell the poor as slaves:  “That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals.” (v. 6).  This is a violation of the sixth commandment: “You shall not murder.”

In human society, covetousness (strong craving for possessions) is the most common and dangerous sin. Desperate to get more money and power, unscrupulously; the natural instinct to steal and to reach to the top for personal gain at the expense of others.  Deceitfulness is accepted as a normal phenomenon of doing business, all aimed at satisfying oneself, sacrificing the weak for personal purposes.   Evoking people to profit at the expense of others is a belief that goes against God.   This situation arises due to “a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.” (v. 11)  Therefore, nurturing daily Bible reading and listening carefully to God’s word is an indispensable spiritual exercise for every Christian.

I WILL SPARE THEM NO LONGER

I WILL SPARE THEM NO LONGER (阿摩司書 Amos 7:1-17)

PRAYER:   Dear Lord, wake me morning by morning, wake my ear to listen like one being instructed.  (Isaiah 50 4)

SCRIPTURE READING:   Amos 7: 1-17

INSIGHT:  Chapter 7, verses 1 to 9,  mentions 3 consecutive visions.  Amos gives a narrative of the first and the second vision (chapter 7, v. 1, 2, 4).   Afterwards, the prophet cries out to the Lord for mercy (v. 2, 5).  Lastly, God makes a decision (v. 3, 6).     God shows His mercy  every time and “relents”,  and they are spared of the disaster.

But the third vision is different. The Lord says, "I will spare them no longer."   "No longer" is reminiscent of the first two visions (vs. 3, 6), which shows that the Lord gradually revealed His righteous wrath.  This is because Israel’s behavior remained unchanged even after the first two disasters had passed.  The previous disasters were averted,   yet the Israelites still did not mend their ways.   (It may also be assumed that there was an intermediate period between the first and third visions, as documented in chapters 1 to 6.)  Thus, when Amos sensed the arrival of the third vision of destruction, he no longer prayed to stop the disaster; God's mercy had been shown in the first two visions; and now in the third vision, He no longer "relents" nor commands the judgment to stop.

The first and second visions are short, and it doesn’t say why God is sending the disaster,  but the third vision is relatively detailed, and Amos clearly points out here the reason why God is sending the disaster:

(1) Fake Worship  The acts of worship of the Israelites were not only insincere, but they could not even achieve the requirements of John 4:23:   “The true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.”   What’s more, the priest Amaziah said: “This is the king’s sanctuary and the temple of the kingdom.” (v. 13).  The king’s sanctuary was not only the place where the he worshiped, but it was under his authority, his control and supervision.  The king himself could offer sacrifices and manage matters of worship (See 1 Kings 12:31-33).  This is not only hypocritical worship, but ostentatious worship, blatantly using royal power to replace God’s sovereignty, openly violating the first commandment:   “You shall have no other gods before me.”

(2)  Stifling God’s Revelation – Amaziah coerces Amos saying : "Do not prophesy against  Israel, and stop preaching against the descendants of Isaac" (v.  16).  Deceiving oneself and distorting the truth is a fool’s plan.  On the one hand, internally:  “Made the Nazirites drink wine and commanded the prophets not to prophesy.” (2:12)  At the same time, driving away Amos’ external spiritual instructions.

9~10)

A very effective way which Satan uses to tempt people is to make them " not put up with sound doctrine, and to hear what their itching ears want to hear." (2 Timothy 4: 3), making them become "rebellious people, deceitful children, children unwilling to listen to the Lord’s instruction.  They say to the seers, ‘See no more visions!’ and to the prophets, ‘give us no more visions of what is right!  Tell us pleasant things, prophesy illusions.’”   (Isaiah 30:9-10)

THREE FAULTS EASILY COMMITTED BY A RICH SOCIETY

THREE FAULTS EASILY COMMITTED BY A RICH SOCIETY (阿摩司書 Amos 6:1-14)

PRAYER:  Thank you Lord, though You were rich, for our sake You became poor, so that we through Your poverty might become rich. (2 Corinthians 8:9)

SCRIPTURE READING:  Amos 6:1-14

INSIGHT:  When Amos conveyed the message of God, although Israel had surrendered to Assyria, their economy was still quite wealthy.  Many verses in this chapter describe the prosperity of the nation of Israel and Judah:  “You notable men of the foremost nation…you who are complacent…you who feel secure.” (v. 1)   You lie on beds adorned with ivory and lounge on your couches.  You dine on choice lambs
and fattened calves.
You strum away on your harps like David and improvise on musical instruments.   You drink wine by the bowlful and use the finest lotions.” (v. 4-6)  However, they “stored up things for themselves but were not rich toward God.” (Luke 12:21)  The reason was spiritual decay:

(1) SELFISHNESS – They were complacent (v. 1), they were just enjoying themselves “feasting and lounging” (v. 7),  “did not grieve over the ruin of Joseph” (v. 6).  “Whoever shuts their ears to the cry of the poor will also cry out and not be answered.” (Proverbs 21:13)

(2) UNFAIRNESS – “Do horses run on the rocky crags? Does one plow the sea with oxen?
But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness.” (v. 12)  Fairness was the original force to safeguard order in society, it had a shielding and  healing effect; people today have corrupted it, it’s not only bitter and sour but it has a bad taste and it’s poisonous, extremely harmful to society.   Fairness and justice is a theme often mentioned in the book of the prophets, because:  “The Lord Almighty will be exalted by His justice, and the holy God will be proved holy by His righteous acts.” (Isaiah 5:16)

(3) ARROGANCE -- In an economically-oriented society, material and wealth are indicators of human success. Since Israel is prosperous and rich, comfortable and worry free,  it was natural that they had the feeling of success.  They were like Nebuchadnezzar:  As the king was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, he said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?  Therefore, the prophet rebuked them saying:  “You who rejoice in the conquest of Lo Debar and say, “Did we not take Karnaim  by our own strength?” (v. 13)

We must seriously ponder on the sayings of Agur son of Jakeh:  “Two things I ask of you, Lord;  do not refuse me before I die:  Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread.  Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God. (Proverbs 30:7-9)

PRAYER:  My soul yearns for you, O Lord; my spirit longs for you. (Isaiah 26:9)

SCRIPTURE READING:  Amos 5:1-27)

INSIGHT:  In the previous chapter, the prophet Amos spoke negatively to those who had come to Bethel and Gilgal to ask for God’s favour, stating that their meaningless offerings were a sin. In this chapter Amos tells his listeners a positive message: Seek God.

(1)  The prerequisite of seeking -- "See me and live." (v. 4) There is some irony in this sentence.  The worshipers thought that they were seeking the Lord in holy places. Thus, at the end of verse 5, a forceful wordplay is used, and Amos condemns the places which they thought were holy saying that those "will be reduced to nothing."  It is not easy to translate verse five from Hebrew to Chinese.  Lu Cheng Chung ’s translation explains the name of these places in small brackets:  “Do not seek Bethel, do not go to Gilgal, do not journey to Beersheba.  For Gilgal will surely go into exile (the pronunciation of the word "Exile" is similar to that of “Gilgal”), and Bethel [ie, the Temple of God] becomes Beth-aven [ie, the Temple of Idols]. The people were seeking the Lord, but they were looking for Him in the wrong places.  They must know first what they are seeking for, it’s not a place,  and it’s not something that can be substituted or a replaced.

(2) The result of seeking -- "Seek me and live." (v. 4)  In times of turmoil and chaos of war, while the nation was lingering on in a worsening condition, "to live" may have meant not to be killed; but it also carries with it a spiritual connotation.   Like, "Those who seek the Lord will praise Him— may your hearts live forever! " (Psalm 22:26),  " You who seek God, may your hearts live! " (Psalm 69:32)  Thus,  Lu Chen Chung's translation says: "Seek me, come and live."

(3) The object of seeking-"Seek the Lord and live" (6)  Don’t just seek an "unknown god" blindly  (Acts 17:23), but seek “He who made the Pleiades and Orion,  who turns midnight into dawn  and darkens day into night, who calls for the waters of the sea
and pours them out over the face of the land— the Lord is His name.
"(v. 8).  Repeating the idea from Amos 4:13:  "He who forms the mountains, who creates the wind, and who reveals his thoughts to mankind, who turns dawn to darkness, and treads on the heights of the earth— the Lord God Almighty is his name. "

(4) The way of seeking – To seek is more than just a wish, “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.   Each tree is recognized by its own fruit.…A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart.” (Luke 6:43-45).   So,  in order to seek the good God, one must “Seek good, not evil, that you may live.  Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you,  just as you say He is.” (v. 14)

God said:  If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.  Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place.” (2 Chronicles 7:14-15)

PRAYER:  Lord, please help me to prepare my heart to have fellowship with You.

SCRIPTURE READING:  Amos 4:1-13

INSIGHT:  When the Israelites heard the prophet declare a message of judgment on them, a very natural response was to go to the temple, make an offering and ask for mercy.  Hence, Amos mentions what the Israelites did, they:  “Went to Bethel…to Gilgal…brought sacrifices every morning…tithed every three years…and burned leavened bread as a thank offering…” (v. 4-5)  However, their sacrifices were not only unacceptable to God, they were considered a sinful act towards God.  Because they were:

(1) HYPOCRITES – “ ‘Burn leavened bread as a thank offering and brag about your freewill offerings—boast about them, you Israelites,  for this is what you love to do,’ declares the Sovereign Lord.” (v. 5)  This is a sense of irony here.  If you pay careful attention to the sentence structure in this section, you will notice that the phrase, “what you love to do,” isn’t really referring to the offerings mentioned above, but to their “bragging about their freewill offerings --- boasting about them.”  A freewill offering to God must come from the heart, and it need not be proclaimed publicly.  But they announced it as a major event, to catch people’s attention, so that people would praise them for it; totally missed the point of the spirit of sacrifice.  Lu Chen-Chung’s Chinese version translated this kind of self-bragging motive as:  “Proclaim and publicize your freewill offering!  Because, O Israel, that is what you love!”  Like what Jesus said:  “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.   So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full… And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.  (Matthew 6:1-2, 5)

(2) UNREPENTANT – Verses 6 to 11 mentions 5 aspects which end with,
“yet you have not returned to me.”   Each of these five points indicates a judgment from God with the purpose of leading them to repentance; but time after time they did not return to God.  Hunger and lack of food was in vain (v. 6);   drought did not help them see their own situation (v. 7-8);  withering and rotting of their crops did not open their eyes (v. 9); plagues and catastrophic wars were ineffective (v. 10); even when disasters overwhelmed them, like what Sodom and Gomorrah encountered; even after all that, the Israelites still did not feel that they were in a plight situation.

(3) UNPREPARED – When a person comes before the altar to offer a sacrifice, he must be prepared, he shouldn’t come empty-handed (Deuteronomy 16:16).  But the prophet refers to the preparation of the heart, “Israel, prepare to meet your God.” (v. 12)  There is a bit of irony here because the act of worship of a pilgrim is to bring people to meet  God once again; however, the prophet cannot expect it to be a joyful encounter, he is hinting that they will be facing judgment.  At the end, the prophet tells the worshippers that the God that they will meet is the Lord God Almighty, He created the heavens and the earth, and only He can bring about the judgment which He proclaimed.
